1908 - Edgeworth David, Douglas Mawson, Alistair McKay, Jameson Adams and Eric Marshall are the first to reach the summit of Mount Erebus, 3,794 metres (12,448 ft) the worlds southernmost active volcano on Shackleton's Nimrod expedition.
