1910 - "A chanty at the pump", the Terra Nova at sea l-r: Bowers, Cherry, Bruce, Day, back to camera - Drake.


1909 - Shackleton and his South Pole party reach safety after signalling the Nimrod by setting off a carbide flare at Vince's Cross. Having neglected to take any liquid water to do so, they urinated on it. "It went off with a slight explosion". They had walked 1700 miles.


1898 - the Belgica is iced into the pack, the start of the first overwintering in Antarctica, unexpected by the crew possibly planned by de Gerlache the expedition leader. It was the start of 7 months of hardship, mental and physical illness and many lessons learned the hard way.
