1903 - Jean-Baptiste Charcot and the First French Antarctic Expedition on the Francais sails from Le Havre. An almost immediate freak accident leads to the death of a sailor named Maignan, Charcot delayed the expedition to return his body to his widow in her Breton village.


1908 - Jean-Baptiste Charcot ("The gentleman of the pole" - Scott) and the Second French Antarctic Expedition on the Pourqoi-Pas? sail south. They are carrying three motor cars that will never be used and the finest assortment of wines that were ever taken to high latitudes.
