1911-14 - Cecil Thomas Madigan, ice mask, the meteorologist with Mawson's Australasian expedition. "We have to go out and take scientific measurements in all weathers. Sometimes in a blizzard ice builds up around our hood."


1916 - The James Caird lands at South Georgia after an 800 mile open ocean journey, "Clumsy with cold, exhaustion and swollen numb feet we emptied the boat. Hot milk, hot hoosh, up half the night saving the boat from the sea." They are on the wrong side of the island.
