1820 - Russian, Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen is the first human to lay eyes on the continent of Antarctica at a position about lat 69°21?S, long 2°14?W, with the ships Vostok and Mirny. ??????????????????????????? 1820 - Russian Fabien Gottleib von Bellingshausen with the ships Vostok and Mirnyi crosses the Antarctic Circle, the first to do so since Cook in 1773. Each crew member was paid 8 times the normal amount with extra bonuses and allowances for officers and scientists.
1898 - Roald Amundsen is the first man to ski in Antarctica on the Belgica expedition, the first purely scientific expedition to Antarctica and the first to winter over at continental latitudes.
