Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.
1911 - Scott (centre standing) and his over wintering party (two men are not in the picture) outside the Cape Evans hut. Spring journeys were being made while the sea-ice was still strong and stable, final preparations and plans for the journey to the South Pole were put into place. A time of promise and excitement.
Roald Amundsen, Norwegian South Pole Expedition on the ship Fram, 1910 - 1912.
1911 - Amundsen:
"-56C (-69F) at camp, 18 and a half miles covered navigating by the sun, compasses still frozen. Tried to open a bottle of gin and aquavit, both were solid. Gin broke on thawing and was thrown out into the snow which started all the dogs sneezing."
