Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.
Crevasse rescue, drawing by Edward Wilson. The harness acts as a safety device with the sledge (usually) acting as a brake if a crevasse is found and broken through. Hanging in space is a better outcome as it means not hitting ice on the way down, rescue by a companion follows.
