1911-1914 - Charles Hoadley on skis by Mawson's expedition hut. Placing a hut was always a bit hit and miss. Built on rock rather than snow or ice in the summer, come winter the prevailing winds could build up drifted snow, though that snow adds valuable insulation and wind-proofs that side.
1911 - Douglas Mawson records in his diary that the mens' spirits were lifted because of lighter winds which had dropped to an average of 45 mph, a "strong gale". Arriving during an unusually calm spell, he had established his base in one of the windiest spots on earth
