Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917
1916 - Ernest Shackleton rescues the crew of the Endurance from Elephant Island.
A southerly gale sent the pack-ice north, the tug Yelcho slipped through and reach Elephant Island, a careful approach in thick fog.
"1.5 miles out we see tiny figures on the beach, waving and lighting a fire, within half an hour we had reached the shore by row boat."
"Are you all well?"
Wild - "We are all well, boss".
Within an hour of the Yelcho arriving, all are aboard, Shackleton will not risk the ice, two farewell toots and off north. 137 days on Elephant Island, and not a single man had been lost.
