Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events

Carsten E. Borchgrevink, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Southern Cross, 1898 - 1900.

1899 - Evans, Bernacchi and Fougner at Cape Adare. An early expedition where many "hard lessons" were learned, the near loss of the ship, near asphyxiation, a fire in the hut and damage and loss from the wind. The first to take dogs to Antarctica.

Otto Nordenskjold, Swedish Antarctic Expedition on the ship Antarctic, 1901-1904.

1902 - Karl Andersson, Samuel Duse and Toralf Grunden put ashore at Hope Bay by their ship Antarctic to bring back the wintering party from Snow Hill Island (200 miles). They are unable to reach Snow Hill and the ship sank stranding them for a winter of discomfort and deprivation.
