1911 - Bernard Day, motor-mechanic on one of the motor sleds in front of Mount Erebus on Scott's final expedition. Formerly an employee of the Arrol Johnston Motor-Car Company, he was recruited by Shackleton to attend to the first car taken to Antarctica 4 years earlier.


1898 - The "British Antarctic Expedition" on the Southern Cross led by Carsten Borchgrevink, the first expedition to deliberately over winter in Antarctica departs Kristiana, Norway. It was financed by a wealthy British magazine publisher and had a largely Norwegian crew.
