Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events

1911-1914 - Australasian Antarctic Expedition, camping in light drifting snow. The pyramid tent with four poles, a circular entrance that is tied closed and a wide valance that can be weighed down with sledging boxes or snow blocks is a design still widely used in Antarctica today.

1921 - Maxime Lester and Thomas Bagshawe decline a final chance to leave Antarctica for the winter, the only remainers of a group of four expeditioners (50 had been planned, the leader had also left). They lived in an upturned whaling boat at the tip of the Peninsula.
