1914 - The Aurora at Macquarie Island. Such ice forms when the ship sails through rough seas with low air temperatures, as well as freezing together equipment for the operation of the ship it can make it top heavy and unbalanced, so needs to be broken off and removed as here.
1913 - Following the death of his second travelling companion in less than a month and now left alone: Douglas Mawson, "I read the Burial Service over Xavier this afternoon. As there is little chance of my reaching human aid alive."
1908 - Ernest Shackleton, Frank Wild, Eric Marshall and Jameson Adams come within 97.5 miles of the South Pole, a new farthest south at 88°23S. Shackleton in a letter to to his wife after turning back: "I thought, dear, that you would rather have a live ass than a dead lion."
