1913 - Douglas Mawson makes it back to his base after the loss of two companions, all dogs and most supplies, he is greeted as if back from the dead, he must spend another winter before return to Australia. "...the long journey was at an end-a terrible chapter of my life was finished!"


1911 - Mount Erebus towering above the Barne Glacier which flows down its western slopes on Ross Island. The permanent lava lake (one of only 5 on earth) of this active volcano is constantly degassing, smoke can be seen emerging. Photo Herbert Ponting.
