Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1914 - Shackleton's ship Endurance enters pack ice in the Weddell Sea. The aim is to sail as far south as possible and put a party ashore who will try to cross the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. Instead the ship is destined to be crushed in the ice and the men have to rescue themselves.
1821 - Sealers, American Nathaniel Palmer and Briton George Powell discover the South Orkney Islands, Powell lands on the largest of the group and names it Coronation Island for the coronation of King George IV. (I was fortunate enough to have this as my daily view for two years.)
Coronation Island, the Sunshine Glacier as seen from Signy Island
to the south.
Both are part of the South Orkney's group.
