Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914.

1912 - The "Adelie Land Meteorite" was found by Frank Bickerton (top picture) on Mawson's Australasian expedition. It weighs about 1kg and was the first meteorite to be found in Antarctica which is still one of the best places on earth to find them, the first of tens of thousands.


Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.

1914 - The Endurance departs Grytviken whaling station, South Georgia with coal piled up to 7-8ft on the deck. The plan is to land on the southern Weddell Sea coast and cross the continent via the South Pole.

The whaling captains warned Shackleton that it was a very heavy ice year in the Weddell Sea.
