Where the name comes from: Latin granatus - little seed, probably from the pomegranate which has seeds of a similar size and color to gem garnets. 14th century Middle English gernet - dark red.Where the stones come from: Worldwide, industrial garnets are used as abrasives, gemstone production is much less. There are many names for types of garnets which often reflect their origins.
Chemistry: A variety of complex silicates X3Y2Si3O12 The two metals, given as X and Y are variable, e.g. Ca3Fe2Si3O12.
Colors: Most commonly deep red and shades of red, though garnets are available in all colours other than blue.
