Where the name comes from: Arabic anbar, Latin ambar, originally referred to what is now called ambergris from sperm whales, both ambergris and fossil resin amber were found washed ashore leading to some confusion.

...and another thing: Amber can include fossil insects and spiders that were trapped as it was produced. A whole room lined with amber was created in the early 1700's, it was rebuilt in 2003 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
